Learning How to Support Your Children to be Safe
We know that helping a child feel safe starts from the beginning of their life. As they grow communicating with them about feeling safe is very important.
There are also many other conversations that you also need to have – topics about growing up, learning about their body and its changes, learning about friendships and relationships. We will be exploring these topics in our companion website.
On this website we want to talk about ways of supporting your child feeling and being safe – what you can do yourself and what you can do for and with your child.
We know that it is very hard to think about your child being unsafe. These are very hard things to talk, think and read about.
We also know that you strongly believe that it is not acceptable for them to be placed in situations where they are scared or uncomfortable, don’t receive the physical or emotional care they need, are bullied, isolated, made fun of, or threatened.
It is not acceptable if they are shown inappropriate material, touched inappropriately or sexually abused.
These activities are unacceptable whether they are undertaken by other children, or by adults.
To ensure these situations do not occur, everyone who cares for a child, including parents, need to be clear about:
- what activities constitute poor and inappropriate practice and should not be tolerated;
- what activities are against the law, and need to be reported to appropriate authorities to ensure the perpetrator is no longer a danger to your child and other children.
